BLK River x Voina Group
Kick off worldwide solidarity FREE VOINA actions by Voina.

"Voina Wanted - worldwide solidarity action by the Voina Group for the persecuted group member Oleg Vorotnikov

As a protest against the repressions of the Russian artist, Voina activists already hung dozens of the 3×4 m banner depicting a portrait of Oleg Vorotnikov in various cities of the world. It is known that on demand of the Russian Interior ministry, Interpol put the artist on the international wanted list and is searching for him outside of Russia. It is also known that during the arrest on November 15, 2010 Russian cops confiscated all the IDs from Oleg Vorotnikov, Leonid Nikolayev, Natalia Sokol and her son Kasper, so none of them can leave the country. The "Voina Wanted" action mocks the actions of Russian Interior ministry and Interpol, which also needs to be reformed as it has become a toy in the hands of the corrupted bureaucrats from the authoritarian countries.

The protest art action started in Vienna with the support the Black River Festival, Wolfgang S. (president of Lomographische AG), Catherine Hug (curator of Kunsthalle Wien) and Brad Downey ( Brad Downey ).

For the third time, BLK River Festival will take place in Vienna this year. In the course of the festival for art in the public space, projects and art performances are spreading through the whole city, making it the center of urban art worldwide for a short time.

It is the goal of the festival to establish Vienna as an interesting playground for urban art in the long run. The mixture of local and international artists creates a transnational community, which forms long-term bonds and pushes the internationalization of Vienna.

BLK River is not making claims to grow quantitatively in the course of the next few years, but to essentially continue to develop projects that are groundbreaking for the artistic form of expression in the public space.

The international orientation of the festival will for the first time be complemented this year by a multitude of local artists. Christian Falsnaes, Erwin Wurm, Leopold Kessler and Marlene Hausegger will be realizing projects alongside artists like Ivan Argote, JR, Akay, Swoon, Aram Bartholl, OX and Voina Group.

This year, work at the long-term project at Alberner Hafen (Albern Harbor) will pick up again, where last year a piece by BLU caused quite a media sensation. The second corn silo will be worked on. The Alberner Hafen project is not only the biggest of its kind in Europe, but through its direct connection to the airport autobahn it is an attraction of a special kind.

Another key area of the festival is the Donaukanal (Danube Canal), where in the last years works have already been created by Know Hope, Brad Downey and Bastardilla. Also this year, artists will go about doing projects on this wall of fame.

Another highlight of BLK River Festival 2011 is the movie night at Gartenbau Cinema, where the internationally renowned movie "Women are Heroes" by French artist and TED winner JR will be shown, a movie that deals with the daily struggle and heroism of women in the Middle East, Brazil and Africa.

In the end, different from 2010, there will be a group exhibition this year, where selected works of the represented artists will be shown.

The theme of BLK River 2011 is LOVE.
