Dass die Donau international auch Black River genannt wird, liegt weniger an ihrer Wasserqualität als an der Tatsache, dass sie im Schwarzwald entspringt und ins Schwarze Meer mündet. Und weil die Farbe Schwarz nicht nur ein physikalisches Ereignis ist, sondern aufgrund kulturgeschichtlicher Traditionen und Erfahrungen mit Werten wie Radikalität und Andersartigkeit belegt ist, entschied sich das Team von Apocalyptic Colors, sich bei der Namensgebung für sein Street Art Festival vom Black River inspirieren zu lassen. Passenderweise finden die meisten Projekte des Festivals entlang der Donau bzw. des Donaukanals statt.
Alles ist im Fluss. Das gilt erst recht für Street Art.
Die drei Säulen Festivals sind seine zahlreichen Außenprojekte, eine Filmreihe und eine Gruppenausstellung. Gezeigt werden ausschließlich Positionen von Künstlern aus fünf Kontinenten, deren Arbeiten für die fortschreitende Erweiterung des Begriffes Street Art stehen: weg von der reinen, illegalen Kunst an der Wand, hin zu New Media, Bildhauerei, Museumsbetrieb und Verkaufserfolgen. Wobei auch viele etablierte Vertreter der Szene mit ihren Arbeiten gerne an den Ort ihrer Anfänge zurückkehren: die Straßen und Wände der Großstadt. Ein Aspekt, der auch im Rahmen des Festivals verhandelt werden wird.

Das Blk / River Festival bespielt die Stadt in drei Akten: Die ersten Außenprojekte sind ab Anfang Oktober zu sehen, wobei im Wochentakt weitere Außenprojekte realisiert werden. Am 22. Oktober eröffnet die große Gruppenausstellung, die bis Ende November zu sehen sein wird. Und am 22. Oktober gibt es ein weiteres Highlight: eine Ausstellung mit 24 Bildern pro Sekunde – die Filmreihe des Black River Street Art Festivals.

That internationally the Danube is also called “Black River,” has less to do with the river’s water quality than with the fact, that the Danube originates in the “Black Forest” and empties into the “Black Sea”. And, because the hue “black” is not just a physical event, but historically also co-notates qualities such as radicalness and otherness, the Apocalyptic Colors team decided on the nomenclature of “Black River” for Viennas first Urban & Street Art Festival to be. And hence part of the festival projects can be found along the stretch of the river Danube that passes the City of Vienna, and the “Danube Canal” (Donaukanal), passing the city’s energetic inner core.

The three pillars of the festival are its streetart projects; a film series; and a group exhibition. The Black River Festival focuses on artists of a wide spectrum, whose work stands in the forefront in terms of expanding the concept of Street Art – convincing their audience to abandon the simplifying notion of the illegal art on the wall; venturing to new modes of practice and expression; and of course the Kunstbetrieb.
An aspect also included in the Festival is the impulse of many of its representative artists to return to the spaces where most of them began and still love to work – the streets, hubs and walls of big cities.

There will be street and gallery projects generated daily until the grand opening of the group show @ Ofroom (Taborstraße 18) on the 22nd of October; that also hosts an additional highlight of the festival – an exhibition with 24 pictures per second – the Black River Festival film series.
